The Long Green Season
by Fr. John Bolton

This year because of the very early date of Easter there are 28 Sundays after Pentecost. This is more than half the year!

Because the liturgical colour for this part of the year - sometimes called Ordinary time - is green I'm calling it the “long green season.” I sincerely hope that we will not have another year of drought and that green, the colour of nature and of growth, will be evident during this time - not only in church but in the world around us.

The Sundays after Pentecost are those in which we live out the new life we have in our Risen Saviour. We do this in the context of a natural order that reflects in itself the renewal of life and reveals in all its many ways the glory of God. During thislong season I have prepared some surprises to enliven our worship and our parish life. These will include visiting preachers and celebrants, visiting musicians and some liturgical variation. There will also be some courses, during our Adult Christian Education time between the services, offered by visiting teachers.

What follows is information about some of our summer program – more information will come in June.

Sunday June 15, 2008: Father Ted Hackett, former Director of the Anglican Studies Program and presently at Holy Family in Jasper, will be our Celebrant and Preacher at 11:00 am.
Sunday June 29, 2008: At 11:00 am we will celebrate a Celtic Mass with appropriate music.
Sunday June 29, 2008 - Sunday July 20, 2008: Bishop Allan will be leading a course in our Adult Group at 9:45 am. Topics will be announced nearer the time.
Sunday July13, 2008: Father Certain, who is currently interim Rector of St Peter and St Paul in Marietta, will be our Celebrant and Preacher at 11:00 am. Father Certain attended Our Saviour when he was a student at Emory and later came home here when he returned from Viet Nam where he had been a POW.
Saturday July 26, 2008 - Sunday July 27, 2008: Martin Darby of the Institute for Servant Leadership will be in the Parish to conduct meetings with the Vestry and others of our parish leadership on the subject of “Servanthood in the Ministry of Christ.” He will preach at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services on the Sunday. This will also be the day of our Parish Picnic.
Sunday August 1, 2008: At 11:00 am we will celebrate another Celtic Mass with appropriate music.
During August or early September we will have a visitation by Bishop Alexander to mark the completion of the first two years of our special relationship with the Diocese. “Show and tell” time!

In the early Fall:

We look forward to another “Kirking of the Tartans.”

Planning is also underway for a Choral Evensong - probably shared with another parish during this long green season.

Join us for all this and much more. Things will be lively at COOS during the coming months!
